Open Space Restoration at The Urban Farm

Restoring Degraded Land for Environmental Sustainability

As a recipient of one of our 2024 demonstration project grants, The Urban Farm is leading an impactful initiative to restore nine acres of degraded soil and agricultural land in Northeast Denver, with the assistance of Metro DNA and several regional partners. This project aims to revitalize the area through silvopasture, riparian buffer restoration, and the establishment of permanent vegetation cover. By enhancing soil health and biodiversity, TUF is not only promoting environmental sustainability but also expanding educational opportunities for the community.

Transforming Stapleton’s Former Airport Land

Located on land previously part of the Stapleton Airport and now under Denver Parks and Recreation, the area has faced severe soil erosion and invasive weeds. The restoration will create a thriving pasture for vegetable crops, perennials, and livestock grazing, contributing to healthy ecosystems and accessible green spaces for public use.

Empowering Urban Youth Through Sustainable Food Systems

TUF's mission is to provide urban youth, especially those from marginalized communities, with opportunities to engage in sustainable food systems by breaking barriers like land access and financial limitations. By partnering with organizations like Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, TUF is transforming a once-neglected site into an interactive learning space that benefits over 40,000 visitors annually from seven counties. The project supports Denver's broader goal of becoming a Certified Community Wildlife Habitat and aligns with the city’s vision for equitable park access.

Fostering Resilient Ecosystems and Community Connections

This restoration will cultivate more resilient ecosystems, nurture connections to nature, and offer hands-on experiences in agriculture, livestock care, and conservation, while emphasizing environmental and social equity. TUF remains committed to collaborating with regional partners and the community to ensure the successful transformation of the land into a thriving natural space that supports both people and nature.
