Bluff Lake Nature Center Northwest Access Entrance Project
Enhancing Accessibility for Central Park and Montebello Communities
Bluff Lake Nature Center is creating a new official access point on the northwest side of the property, thanks to a 2024 demonstration project grant. This new entryway will enhance accessibility for residents of Central Park and Montebello, offering a safe, welcoming entrance to Bluff Lake. It will connect visitors to nature and the Sand Creek Greenway, catering to pedestrians while providing bike racks and a vehicle gate for Bluff Lake and emergency vehicles.
Protecting Fragile Ecosystems Through Sustainable Access
The project addresses habitat damage caused by visitors entering the site by climbing over a fence in the northwest area. By establishing an official access point, Bluff Lake aims to protect its fragile ecosystems and allow the natural resource team to restore the area. This sustainable solution balances the needs of visitors with environmental preservation.
Community-Driven Design for Equitable Nature Access
After two years of extensive engagement with local residents, Bluff Lake Nature Center prioritized community feedback to address access issues. Partnering with organizations like the Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership, Metro DNA, and CU Denver graduate students, the initiative reflects the community's emphasis on equitable access to nature and a welcoming outdoor experience for all.
Fostering Inclusion and Environmental Justice
The new Northwest Access Point is designed to provide better access to nature for historically underserved communities, including BIPOC populations and people with disabilities. By focusing on environmental justice, inclusivity, and community connection, the project seeks to diversify leadership, nurture relationships with local residents, and ensure that more than 90,000 annual visitors, including 8,000 school-aged children, can enjoy Bluff Lake’s rare urban sanctuary.
